Interpreting We convey faithfully a speaker's meaning expressed in English or French into the listener's language. Is interpreting different from translating? An interpreter listens to a person in the source language and renders immediately the message orally in the target language either consecutively (e.x. in courts) or simultaneously (ex. in conferences)
A translator reads a written document in a source language and reproduces the text in a written form in the target language.
Interpreteting and translating require different skills. Both should have a high standard of command of two languages, and both should have a thorough mastery of their specialised fields.
A translator has the luxury to research the subject and to look for the right words in dictionaries and specialised writings in order to produce the most accurate and in a written style readable in the target language.
An interpreter's job is more demanding in the sense that s/he must think on her/his feet, relaying the spoken message accurately and faithfully on the spot to the listener. Interpreters have no time to look up for the "right word"in dictionaries , skilled interpreters come up with a satisfactory word otherwise they loose the thread of the message.
